The pre primed mdf crown molding i purchased was under 1 foot and all of the boards were perfectly true and free from any surface blemishes.
Place the crown molding so that it is rests upside down and at a 45 degree angle against the saw fence. We used the kreg crown pro and it seemed to do the trick. Hold the straight end against the wall and mark where the crown moulding exits the cabinet. Especially when you get to the corners or the edges.
I attached the crown molding to the ripped down 1x6 with 3 4 brads. However for a sturdier approach you should install framing along the cabinet tops. A corner whether outside or inside is where two pieces of crown moulding seem together. Cheap wood tends to split crack and warp when compared to mdf.
Measure and mark the front section of crown molding to the cabinet width. Cut at one mark then move the molding along to the next mark. Use the coping saw and knife to cut the inside edge if pieces aren t fitting together well at inside angles. There are dozens of sizes and patterns to choose from and you can even combine multiple moldings for a chunky look.
