How we created our diy kitchen island with prefab cabinets a little trim and unfinished butcher block countertops for an upscale custom look.
Use a circular saw to cut away the raised lip from the bottom of the cabinets. This island is built to house two 36 inch base cabinets but can easily be modified by simply adjusting the width of the center wall. Place the cabinets upside down and back to back then saw a piece of inch plywood to fit across the bottom of both cabinets. Think outside the box and you will end up with a great island for your home.
This project calls for an l shaped toe kick using 2x4s. Measure in from the traced lines using the side and toe kick thickness dimensions and mark the floor. We used the adjustable legs for the perimeter cabinets because they were also secured to the wall for added support. Once built screw the toe kick spacers to the cabinet.
Not sure the ikea adjustable legs are strong enough to withstand people leaning on it from all directions without wall support. Place spacers throughout the toe kick over the points where the cabinets meet. It just shows that you can make a diy kitchen island out of things that most people would throw away. Place the cabinet assembly the island base right side up on the kitchen floor and position the island precisely where you will install it.
