This video shows you exactly how i repainted my old varnished oak kitchen cabinets. Let it dry and sand if needed and then add another coat of the gesso. You can find it at most craft stores. Fill in holes from the hardware if you will replace it with new hardware once the piece is painted.
Apply paint to the cabinetry using the same technique. Use a seal coat primer designed for sanded wood. I gave my kitchen a whole new look for 250all of the supplies i used can. Let any wood filler dry completely before sanding.
Once the swelling happens you probably should clamp it after you apply the gesso. Sand these areas to bare wood and spot prime with a stain killing primer sealer before repainting. Wherever you sand down to bare wood try to blend or feather the edges where the old paint meets the wood so the new paint will lay flat and the paint edges will not be visible or telegraph through the new finish. Disassemble pieces with separate drawers or other removable parts that you will sand and paint separately.
