Follow up by sanding all surfaces with 180 grit sandpaper until they are thoroughly deglossed. You should see the stain start to come off on the steel wool immediately. Scrape the varnish or stain away with a scraper or putty knife. Wipe the surface in a circular motion.
If custom built and stained cabinetry is out of your budget and you have some experience staining wood this could be a good diy project. That may take a day or two depending. Take down the door remove the knob and wash the surface with detergent in warm water to remove the greasy smears common on kitchen surfaces. Use a tack cloth to remove any sanding dust.
