You can alter the measurements to account for installation of a countertop surface such as a granite top. The standard placement for upper cabinets has long been 18 inches above the counter. A family with very tall members might install cabinets slightly higher for convenience. Upper cabinets are much shallower than base cabinets when measuring from the front to the wall so the depth profile of the two almost never aligns.
Being creative with your kitchen design is made even easier with the introduction of higher ceilings and more square feet of floor space in modern home design. Modern installations now often hang 21 to 24 inches above or even much higher to give the work surface below. The distance between countertop and upper cabinets is your playground. 5 inches or shorter might for example install base cabinets at 35 inches above the floor then leave a 15 inch working space and install the upper cabinets starting at 50 inches above the floor rather than the normal 54 inches.
Subtracting the 36 inches of the base cabinet from the 54 inches between the floor and the upper cabinet leaves 18 inches which is the standard space between a countertop and the bottom of the wall cabinets.
