I had planned on using a piece of that foam board stuff to hold things in place but the hinges seem to have a small plastic piece on them now not sure if i can paint them or not. Stephanie my kitchen cabinets have very old hinges too brass ones from the 70s i was wondering the same thing and then i noticed that my bathroom hinges are the exact same as the kitchen but they have been painted white i am sure it is cabinet paint not rustoleum. Pour some metal cleaner into a small container and place the hinges and screws into the cleaner. A tip for anyone interested if you are stripping paint from old hardware all you need to do is use one quart of water with 1 4 cup baking soda put the hardware in it and boil for 10 15 minutes watch closely because it will boil over let cool and easily scrape the paint off much nicer than smelling pain remover. Allow to fully dry between layers.
Step 3 scrub the hinges.
