Medium grit sandpaper makes a good starting point for most projects from sanding unfinished wood to removing old varnish.
Natural bristle brushes are better suited for oil based paints. Start with a medium sandpaper around 100 grit either a sheet of sandpaper or a sanding block. Synthetic bristle brushes work best for latex. Go back over the cabinets and doors with a fine 220 grit sandpaper.
